You Don't Have to Hit Me with a Club

Old timer:  “Hey man, you not in the club?”

Newbie:  “No, I don’t think so.  What club?

OT:  “Jeez man, don’t you know anything? If you want to make it in this town, you got to be in the club.”

N:  “Well, who’s in the club?”

OT:  “Anybody who is anybody.”

N:  O.k., but what does the club do?”

OT:  “Ahh…what do you mean, ‘do’”?

N:  “Like, what activities to you do? Do you raise money for sick kids, sing to people in the hospital, the usual stuff?”

OT:  “Well not exactly, we mainly just sit around and hang out.”

N:  "If I'm understanding you correctly, you're telling me you don't do anything?”

OT:  “Well…shit, that would require work, we just like to drink a lot and smoke cigars.”

N:  “So, it’s really just about being able to say that you hang with the cool people.”

OT:  “Yeah, well…now that you put it that way, that’s pretty much it.”

N:  Ok, how do I get in?”

I wrote this for the Week 82 Trifecta Writing Challenge where we are to write a 33-333 word composition using the word “club” in the context of an association of persons.

  1. Oh yeah, well done. That's what it's all about. Made me laugh. Groucho Marx said it best: I wouldn't want to be part of a club that would have me as a member. :)

    3. Thank you Bill. I was afraid I made this too simple but I guess I wanted to show the stark reality of these situations.

  5. Thanks Ted. I'm glad I fooled you. I didn't know what the guy was going to do either until my fingers hit the keyboard. :)

    1. Thanks Freya. I was tempted to go with that ending, but I try to write what (I think) is reality and I think many people are drawn into these things, for the wrong reasons (me included).

    1. Thank you Steven. I've been immersed in the Brooklyn culture and I live and do business in the south. I think it's the same club! :) Btw, I enjoyed re-reading with Brooklyn accent.

  8. That sounds like the kind of club a group of young kids would come up with. (:

  16. you know what's interesting and slightly sad...that with the death of Jim Gandalfini this week, my first thought was the way old Italian made men sit and smoke and shoot the shit all day long like it is work.

I saw a smoky back room...and Tony Soprano leading the pack.

    Missed ya...so glad you're back.

    1. You hit the nail on the head. Usually dark, cheap wood paneled rooms with faux leather chairs. I met Mr G while he was filming at the Bada Bing. A truly nice man. Btw, the Bada Bibg is a real strip club in NJ with a different name.
